Advanced Improv Intensives
While IMPRO Amsterdam has always offered a wide variety of workshops, they’ve typically been aimed at a broad audience. Basically, if you’ve got some core long-form skills, you’re good to go! If that’s you, don’t worry - most of our workshops this year will continue to be accessible to all.
However, for our more experienced festival-goers, we’re offering something new. Our Advanced Improv Intensives allow our teachers to hand-select a group of highly seasoned performers for their masterclasses, allowing them to dive deeper, push harder, and really stretch their skills.

This workshop will introduce you to some powerful, effective tools from different acting techniques which will boost your improvisation.
With those tools you can create wonderful, dramatic, funny, honest moments on stage and learn how to “cash” them by playing them to the full in a believable, honest and committed way.
The workshop focuses on the following tools: Objective, Obstacle, Sub-text, and Mizanscena. Each session will focus on one tool, so by the end you will have them all in your tool box, ready to use!
Inbal Lori is a graduate of an Art High School (1994) and Nisan Nativ acting studio (2000). Since then, she writes and acts for television and theater and has won prizes and scholarships for her acting and writing.

Musical Improv
intensive
with Heather Urquhart & Markus Wisth Edvarsen
2 days (26/02-27/02)
Showcase on 27/02
Maximum 10 people
€360 (co-taught)
Everybody loves a good musical. From The Sound of Music to Come From Away, Aladdin to Six, songs drive stories and stories lead to songs. So let’s make some up.
This musical improv intensive dives deep into musical narrative; stories with songs. Across the intensive you’ll explore how music and story intertwine, and work closely with fellow improvisers to create something surprising, heartfelt, and theatrically rich.
Across the two days, we’ll explore the role songs play in stories, how they can emerge naturally from scenes, and how to build narratives that flow from character rather than from effortful plot construction. We’ll work toward creating shows where the story feels alive, intuitive and fun, rather than a gradual narrowing of possibilities.
Over the course of the intensive, we’ll cover:
Building a vibrant world for your stories to unfold in
Characters, wants, and what makes them sing
Group numbers, solos, and how different song types support the scene
Giving it a Hollywood ending
This workshop is for confident musical improvisers looking to expand their understanding of narrative and practise, practise, practise. Musical accompaniment will be provided.
Heather originally trained in physical theatre and went on to study improvisation at Chicago’s I.O and Annoyance theatres. She improvises with the Olivier award-winning ‘Showstopper! The Improvised Musical’, ‘Blues Hammer’ - an improvised blues show with the legendary Joe Bill, and UK Longform Veterans The Maydays. Heather also co-wrote a book on the subject of musical improvisation called ‘Sing it!’ with Maydays colleague and BFF Joe Samuel.
Heather was winner of the award for best female performer in the Brighton Fringe & of the Argus Angel Award for artistic excellence. In a previous life she wanted to front an indie band and has been a vocalist with the Mercury music prize nominated Electric Soft Parade and improvised many a concept album with Fred Deakin of Lemon Jelly.
As a teacher and coach, Heather specialises in musical improv; Singing and movement, but also what musicality can teach us about the ebb and flow of longform improvisation. Her style is that of a nurturing drill sergeant and she loves helping people develop and keep surprising themselves.
