IMPRO Amsterdam is marking its 30th anniversary in 2025 by celebrating all of the incredible improvisers and improv communities across The Netherlands, and we want YOU to be a part of it. Hip hip hoera!
Our first step is to really mix up the audition process for our Festival cast by introducing IMPROotje Amsterdam, a one-day mini-festival featuring YOU.
What will that look like?
- On 2 November, up to 48 improvisers from all over the country will meet at the Blauwe Zaal of ‘t Zonnehuis in Amsterdam Noord for a day of workshops and shows that mirror the experience of being in IMPRO Amsterdam’s cast.
- Improvisers will be split up into four groups, each of which will learn a challenging, fun new format from an incredible director in a three-hour workshop, just like our cast members do at the main festival. These formats may be narrative, comedic, dramatic, or even a little abstract; be prepared for anything!
- That evening, it’s showtime. All four teams will get onstage to perform the formats they’ve learned. After the show, the venue will stay open for an afterparty!
- After the mini-festival, we will curate and invite the Local Cast of Impro Amsterdam, as well as our all-local Hosting Team.
Sounds cool, but why a mini-festival instead of traditional auditions?
Traditional auditions can be unpleasant. You travel, potentially quite far, to perform very briefly in a small room in front of a couple of casting directors. It feels arbitrary, stressful, and (if you’re not cast) like a waste of time.
We want to make sure that, whether or not you’re cast, you get something positive out of the experience.
By creating a mini-festival instead:
- You get a valuable, fun experience: a three hour workshop taught by an amazing teacher followed by a public performance
- You get a chance to experience a day in the life of the Local Cast of the festival, so that you have a better sense of what you’re signing up for if you’re cast
- You get plenty of opportunities to show your talent. We’ll be considering not just your performance in the show, but also how you learn, collaborate, and grow during the workshop
- You have the opportunity to meet and play with members of improv communities from all over the country, potentially expanding your own performance and collaboration network
- We get to see YOU in all your glory, instead of stressed and travel-weary.
We want to stress that we specifically encourage talent from outside of Amsterdam to apply for an audition! We may be called IMPRO Amsterdam, but we’d love our Local Cast and Hosting Teams to represent the whole of The Netherlands.
The deadline to apply to take part in the mini-festival is 20 September 2024.
