Directing - IMPRO Amsterdam 2025

Glad you got directed here, Director!

Welcome to the director application for IMPRO Amsterdam 2025! If you’ve got an idea for a format that you’re excited about and you’d like to guide some incredibly talented improvisers into putting it on stage, you’re in the right place.

This year’s festival will run from 15 to 22 February 2025 in Amsterdam Noord, centered around 't Zonnehuis (Zonneplein 30, 1033 EK Amsterdam).

If you are selected as a director, your show may be placed on any day of the festival, so please double check your availability before submitting.

What are we looking for?

We love shows that push the boundaries of improv as theater — while we appreciate a classic format, we’re unlikely to choose one for this festival. We’re looking for new and exciting approaches to theme, staging, structure, even use of technology. Comedic, dramatic, genre, abstract, indefinable — all are welcome.

Anyone is welcome to apply to direct.

What’s in it for you?

If you are selected to direct, we offer:

• One rehearsal (3h) directed by you, paid 65 € per hour
• One show (50 minutes), performed by the IMPRO Amsterdam Cast in the Theaterzaal (300 seats)
• Option of having an active () role during the show (musician, ), paid 65 €
• 20% off any workshop you want to purchase
• Free ticket for the night of your show + one additional free ticket for another show at the festival
• The opportunity to meet and work with a phenomenal community of improvisers from around the world

Remember, if selected, your show(s) can be scheduled any day from 15 to 22 February 2025.

Deadline to apply

The form to apply will be open until 30 September, 2024.

We will let you know whether or not you have been selected before the end of October.

What if I want to do something else in the festival too?

You can also apply for other roles in the festival — all applications have the same deadline:

• Performing with an Established Group — for troupes looking to perform a practiced, mainstage ready format
• Performing a New Format  — for fresh or seasoned improvisers wanting to try out something new
• Teaching workshops — for improv teachers looking to share what they know (all lengths, any topic)
• Hosting a Jam Session — for leading an original, playful jam open to all festival attendees

What do we need from you?

Pretty much what you’d expect — some information about you for our marketing, contact info, and a pitch for what you’d like to direct. You are welcome to submit proposals for up to two shows.

Your email and phone numbers will not be communicated to anyone other than festival organizers and your members.
